If you’re looking for some great tips on how to save money and budget wisely, Power Spending, Getting More for less is definitely worth a read. This book addresses areas of spending and budgeting whilst adding some humour and wit along with references galore. If there’s a question the authors didn’t answer in the text of the book, certainly the references at the end of each chapter will guide you in the right direction.
The book follows Bill and Penny Munney and the Munney family through making a budget, the types of debt (good vs. bad) to talking with our children about money, goal setting for the future, and having fun on a tight budget. Each chapter poses hypothetical questions from the Munneys, which are answered and then explained in further detail. I especially enjoyed the blurbs on the page sides that were quick tips to flip through (i.e. How to Shop Smart, Do the Math and Common Cents). These were super handy and outlined a ton of information you might otherwise overlook for everyday things like grocery shopping and home energy savings.
Chapter 3 focuses more specifically on debt and ways it can be dealt with. The authors discuss using credit cards wisely and the possible benefits of using credit, to knowing when you’re in over your head. They discuss getting rid of debt, how long it will take, and the best way to go about doing so. They also address other debt solutions that include: debt consolidation, a debt management plan, consumer proposals and personal bankruptcy.
As a credit counsellor I suggest this book for those who are in the midst of personal bankruptcy or a consumer proposal as it will equip you with all the right tools to get yourself back on track now, and it help you to continue budgeting and goal setting for the future. If you are struggling with your finances, this book may help you to gain control with some simple budgeting techniques.
