Lien

A legal right that a creditor has in a debtor’s property. For example, Canada Revenue Agency has the ability to place a lien on your house if you have not paid your taxes, and the lien has the same impact as a mortgage. The lien is not discharged until you pay the lien, or sell the property and the proceeds from the sale of the property are used to pay the lien.
