Community Involvement

Hoyes Michalos is dedicated to bringing positive, measurable change to the neighbourhoods in which we live and work. As Licensed Insolvency Trustees, we see the impact struggling paycheque to paycheque takes on the average Ontarian and how this causes many to rely on debt to make ends meet.

We recognize that consistent, affordable access to food, education and extra-curricular activities leads to healthy, empowered individuals and prosperous societies. We volunteer our time and donate to valuable local organizations that do the real hard work to achieve these objectives.

We are a Living Wage Employer

More and more people are working for low wages. We see the financial struggle this creates every day. Hardworking Ontarians face impossible choices – buy food or heat the house or pay the rent. The result, as we know, can be spiraling debt, anxiety, and long-term health problems.

While we give back to our communities in many ways, it all starts with how we operate as an employer. Hoyes Michalos has made a commitment that all direct and indirect staff working at our firm will receive a living wage and we are proud to be a Certified Living Wage Champion.

We’ve partnered with The Food Bank of Waterloo Region

Much like debt problems, food insecurity can happen because of a catastrophic life event – a sudden job loss, underemployment, illness or change in a relationship. We are delighted to help change the narrative around the ‘typical’ food bank participant. Like those we help, these are our neighbours, our coworkers, and our friends.

With our partnership with The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, through their Food & Fund Drive, we hope to inspire conversations that challenge and change the misconceptions around food and financial insecurity.

We help survivors of human trafficking through Project Recover

Human trafficking is a major problem around the world and in our very own region of Kitchener-Waterloo. In addition to the human and emotional consequences suffered, many victims have their identity stolen and used to apply for credit in their name, leading to significant financial problems. Project Recover is a volunteer team of financial experts, offering their services to victims and their advocates so they can rebuild their finances and credit report for better access to housing, education, and a more prosperous future.

Hoyes Michalos is proudly sponsoring “safe” houses called the Hoyes Michalos House in Guelph and Burlington, where young victims can live while they attend school, work, and get a fresh start. Our co-founder Doug Hoyes is also a member of Project Recover’s Oversight Committee.

“I was overwhelmed with credit debt. Being bombarded with constant phone calls, and letters, from debt collectors was very stressful. It seemed like there was no way out. Until I heard about Hoyes, on my local talk radio station. They are friendly, caring, knowledgeable, and professional, with many year's of experience. During my first meeting, they took the time to learn about my debt, and financial situation. Explaining my different options, and helping to come up with a plan that would work best for me. They helped me avoid filing for bankruptcy, by putting forward a consumer proposal to my creditors. My proposal was accepted, and I am happy to finally be debt free, thanks to Hoyes. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. Hoyes are the best debt relief specialists.”
