The Hoyes Michalos 6 Step Fresh Start Program

You deserve a fresh start! While you may have completed or are completing your bankruptcy or proposal with us, you can use our 6 Step Fresh Start Recovery Program to get a fresh start.

1. Stop collection calls, letters and lawsuits

You filed your bankruptcy or consumer proposal, but you are still getting collection calls and letters.  Why haven’t they stopped?  How can we make them stop?

2. Get tips at your free Fresh Start Credit Counselling meetings

You will have two meetings with your trustee or credit counsellor where we will give you tips to get a fresh start. At these meetings we will review your information to make sure you are not getting any calls or letters from creditors.  If you filed a consumer proposal we will review the voting to tell you if the proposal was accepted, or what changes are required.  If you filed bankruptcy we will review your monthly income and expense statement and review your other duties.  Either way, you can ask lots of questions, and we’ll give you tips to get a fresh start!

3. Learn to manage your money

Now that you are dealing with your debt, it’s time to manage your money.

4. Build your wealth

Once your debt is gone, you want to start building your wealth.

Start by building an emergency fund and reserve accounts.  Then, once your proposal or bankruptcy is completed, save and invest for the future:

  • start a TFSA
  • if you have children, start an RESP
  • if you or your children have a disability, consider starting an RDSP
  • if you want to save for your retirement, contribute to an RRSP

5. Rebuild your credit

If you plan to borrow in the future (or even rent an apartment, get car insurance, or get a cellphone), there are steps you can take to rebuild your credit.
